Laguna Miscanti, in the Atacama Desert (Northern Chile)
I'd say definitely go visit if one day you get a chance - never saw the atmosphere so pure, the air so clean (it's at 4000m altitude, without any towns nearby, and mostly no clouds either cause of the height).
And the night sky is nothing short of totally amazing :)

Wow! That must have been a wonderful place to be, especially when its like what you had described (: were you able to stay there long? i'd totally go there if i had a tent and a camera, even to see the night sky

Well, it was one month of running all across South America... few days in Atacama, some ten days in Peru (Cusco, Machu Picchu), and then traveling all the way down to Patagonia (and *that* is the most amazing part of the Earth I've ever seen).

Went there with a photographer friend, we also had no tents, no knowledge of Spanish, no transportation or place to stay prearranged... just went there with backpacks and enjoyed a different world.
Lessons learned for next time: I'd take a month for northern part and another month for Patagonia alone, cause trying to go north (Peru) and south (Patagonia) in one month is way too fast. Also, a rent-a-car would often be much better than joining various tourist groups.

If you decide to go some day, feel free to ask for hints :)
(or - if you have time to spare - check out the travel blog: [link] ;))

Cheers! :)

Yep, mostly in El Calafate though =P
(we just rushed through Buenos Aires, and had a bit more than a day around Salta)
I do like Patagonia most :)

btw. you should definitely go to Atacama... it's just so eerie and different, was quite an experience :)

Yeah, I'm still wasting every dime into that lol, though I started paragliding now so there might be some aerial photos too eventually =P

Try it if you get a chance though, nothing to get rid of your fear of heights like jumping off a cliff with a piece of cloth attached to you with a bunch of little strings :giggle:

I bet ;D
But it must be nice, soaring through the air and enjoying the view... though that would probably be spoiled for me by my fear of heights ^^;

No it wouldn't! Seriously, the moment you go up you forget all about it ;)
I get fear standing on the edge of a building, or being in a high place, but this is different, there is a feeling of security in the wing above you, and the only thing you get is an adrenaline rush and you just want to scream "wooohhhoooooooooo!!!!" and have fun =P
