Dubrovnik, the Pearl of Adriatic! (a.k.a. King's Landing from HBO's Game of Thrones ) This photo was taken just after sunset, in that magical blue hour that the lights are up but the night is not yet fully down In the back, you can see the Island of Lokrum.
Although the following rating on the right part of this critique might imply that I dislike the photo, it is just the opposite. However, I do believe that it requires an extra touch, though this certainly does not imply photo-manipulation. However, you could have just taken the picture of the old city core, or in other words the illuminated part of the urban Dubrovnik, leaving out the parts of the archipelago for another photo for it does not combine well at this point of day. There is not enough contrast with the sea or sky, and the palette of the seascape are cold compared to the warm city lights. So in that respect, the whole feel lingers in between coldness and warmness which makes me a bit indifferent, whereas I would be amazed had you waited another 30 minutes, or just left out the rocks in the first plan + the seascape. Otherwise, a great capture of the architecture and different tones of earth colors and textures. Kindest regards, C.
No wonder Dubrovnik is called the Pearl of Adriatic - just looking at this photo and marveling it will prove you so. Once the sun sets, we are to be plunged into darkness if not for the lights which, in this case, bring out the perfection of the old, couple of centuries old, structured city. The wondrous play of yellow and orange lights accentuates the tall, bold walls protecting the city core.
Despite Dubrovnik being the subject of this photo, we still find our gazes wandering over to the small island in the distance, curiously studying the shape, and to the deep, dark sea which dominates over more than a half of the photograph. It is very accentuated that the subject here is extremely well lit whereas the rest of the photograph remains in darkness. Not only that the sea looks slightly 'notorious' but also the island is presented as a dark, brooding shape which brings out the brightness the lights of the city provide even more. Without a second thought, we will find ourselves seeking the safe haven within the walls of the renown ex-Roman colony.
You can't but feel at peace when observing the scenery in front of you, somehow knowing that Dubrovnik will provide all the safety you need. You can almost imagine yourself being there and standing at the hill above the city, watching... letting the tranquility wash over you. It truly does bring out the feeling of strong serenity which completely wins over all other emotions.
Dubrovnik was fortified centuries ago, and even now, now when the tremulous past is over, it looks just as magnificent and strong.
An excellent photograph, a well-chosen subject, a lovely view and a great quality! In one word, magnificent!
I rarely comment, but this is one of the best photos I've seen. Sharpness is great. I love this kind of photo with villages at dusk. Good effect on the sea. If I should find a "defect", i'd darken a bit the sky (specially in the middle/right)
Kindest regards,
C.
